was a historic day as Busoni leadership and communities in Butanyerera Province were honored to inaugurate the newly built Headquarters of Busoni Commune in the presence of the President of the Republic of Burundi, His Excellency Evariste NDAYISHIMIYE. This was also RPCL’s premiere that a Shareholder’s Head of State officiates the inauguration of its social development project.
The social infrastructure was constructed under Local Area Development Plan (LADP), a 30 million US Dollars benefit-sharing program established to enhance regional economic and social development of Rusumo area during the construction of the 80MW Regional Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Project (RRFHP) on behalf of Rusumo Power Company Limited (RPCL).
His Excellency Evariste NDAYISHIMIYE was accompanied by the Governor of Butanyerera, Hon. Victor SEGASAGO and the Administrator of Busoni Commune, Mr. KARENZO François-Xavier. RPCL was represented by Mr. Ghad KUBWIMANA, the RPCL’s head of Corporate Social Responsibility, RPCL staff and Rusumo Project Steering Committee members from Burundi.
After cutting the inaugural ribbon, His Excellency NDAYISHIMIYE visited the Commune’s offices to take stock of functionality and accessibility to citizens. He commended RPCL for its commitment to community investment and highlighted its direct impact on public service delivery provided to Busoni communities; “providing public services under one roof will undoubtedly rip various social and economic benefits to everyone in the area and will save travel time and expenses of citizens”, he stated.
Like any other local administration service office, Busoni commune headquarters facilities give access to social service referrals, housing information, tax and utility assistance, civil registration services to name as well as spaces for public consultation meetings for community groups.
“RPCL is committed to give back to communities through strong corporate social responsibility actions in the three member countries ensuring that all member states are equitably served”, said Mr. KUBWIMANA, RPCL CSRO on that occasion. “The construction of Busoni Commune headquarters is an enhancement to local governance and community wellbeing”, he added.
LADP was implemented in the localities neighboring the 80MW Power Plant in Busoni Commune (Butanyerera Province, former Kirundo Province) and Giteranyi Commune (Buhumuza Province, former Muyinga Province), in Ngara District (Kagera region, Tanzania) and Kirehe and Ngoma Districts (Eastern Province, Rwanda). LADP was formulated in a participatory process whereby each district/ province identified their respective priority investment areas.
